Outside Reading January 2020

From the ELA Department

Second semester English students – don’t forget about Outside Reading! We continually tailor our program to meet the needs of our students – keeping in mind our 4x4 schedule, we have outside reading instead of summer reading. Some students will not be taking an English class until January. The outside reading requirements are listed here, but will also be posted on our website. As always, we will be giving our requirements to the public library as well as Barnes and Noble, so that they may prepare for the extra traffic surrounding the titles. If you have any questions regarding the outside reading requirements, feel free to contact your student’s English teacher or the department chairperson – michelle.hartman@beaufort.k12.sc.us

Directions for College Prep English Students:

We are supporting college prep students and their parents in making enjoyable choices for reading. On the website, you will see a recommended list of books. These books are the South Carolina Young Adult Book Award 2018-2019 nominees. We recommend your student read at least one of these books to gain a great start toward being able to participate in the voting for the best SC Young Adult Book in February. If your student reads three books from this list, he or she will be able to participate in the voting process.

Directions for HHIHS IB/Honors Students:

The outside reading list for HHIHS IB/Honors English courses is listed below. You are required to read specific works. You will take a reading test the first Friday you return for second semester.  Your teacher will have additional assessments on the books such as a Socratic Seminar during your scheduled English class. This work will be a start to the curriculum you will encounter as you enter your English course. See the Media Specialist in your school or local library if you are having difficulty obtaining a copy.
